How to use the rapper name generator

  1. Type your name, your initials (like J.T.) or a single letter into the box, or leave it empty for completely new names.
  2. Choose what to generate: rapper names, producer & DJ names, group & duo names, mixtape & playlist names, or rapper names for pets.
  3. Pick one of 9 styles: Lil & Young, MC & classic, trap, drill (kept clean), old school, conscious, melodic, underground or funny. Choose Female or Male if you want prefixes like Queen and Lady or King and Prince.
  4. Press Generate. Tap a name to copy it, and tap the heart to keep it in your favorites.

The generator works in your browser and never repeats a name during a visit, so every press brings new ideas. It mixes 43 prefixes, 599 words sorted by style and 45 endings (687 parts in all), plus separate word lists for producers, groups, mixtapes and pets. Every word was chosen by hand and kept clean, so the names work for a school talent show as well as for a real stage. The generator also checks each result against a list of famous stage names and skips any name that already belongs to a well-known artist.

What’s my rap name?

Type your first name, or your first and last name, and press Generate. The first result is worked out from the letters of your name and your settings, so it stays the same every time you type the same name: that is your rap name. The rest of the list gives you more options built on your name: a prefix in front (Young Jordan), your name with a strong ending, an alliterating word (Jazzy Jordan), your initials, or a stage spelling of your name. Switch the Generate option to see your producer name, your group name and your mixtape title too.

Your own name is the most personal place to start, and it has a practical upside: people who already know you will recognize it. If you would rather keep your real name private, leave the box empty or type only your initials.

Rap name prefixes and what they mean

A prefix tells people something about you before they hear a single bar. These are the ones the generator uses most, with what each one usually suggests.

PrefixWhat it suggests
LilShort for little. Often marks a younger artist, the youngest member of a crew, or someone who looks up to an older rapper.
Young / YungYouth and a fresh start. Yung is simply a stylized spelling of the same word.
MCMaster of ceremonies. In hip hop it means the rapper: the person on the microphone who keeps the crowd moving.
DJDisc jockey: the person who plays and mixes the records. At the earliest hip hop parties the DJ was the main attraction.
BigSize, status or a big personality. It also works as a friendly nickname.
King / QueenA claim to the top spot, said with a wink or completely seriously.
Kid / BabyYouth and playfulness; good for a name that should not sound too serious.
Lady / MissClassic prefixes for women in rap, with an old-fashioned, confident feel.
GrandmasterBorrowed from chess and martial arts, where it means the highest level of skill.
Doc / ProfessorKnowledge and skill with words, for a rapper who wants to sound like the smartest person in the room.

Rapper names that start with each letter

Type a single letter into the box and every name is built around it: it starts with that letter, or its main word does (Lil Karma for K). Some letters have far fewer words than others, so X, Q and Y give shorter lists.

How to make a rap name

  1. Start with something true. Your name, a nickname friends already use, your initials, your neighborhood or a trait people know you for.
  2. Add a prefix or an ending. Lil, Young, MC or Big in front, or an ending like the Great, Supreme or on the Mic. The table above shows what each prefix suggests.
  3. Try a stage spelling. Many artists change a letter or two so the name looks like a brand.
  4. Say it out loud like a host would. “Make some noise for…” If it sounds right in that sentence, it works.
  5. Search it. Check streaming services and social media before you print it on anything.

Here is how the generator respells names when you type one in. It applies the first rule that fits, and uses the stage spelling for about a third of the names built on yours:

NameStage spellingRule
TylerTyla-er at the end becomes -a
CarlosKarlosa hard C at the start becomes K
ChrisChriza final s becomes z
MaxMaxxa short name ending in x doubles it
SophieSofieph becomes f
CodyKodya hard C at the start becomes K

Where rap names come from

Hip hop began at parties in the Bronx, New York, in the 1970s, and the culture is often described as four elements: MCing (rapping), DJing, breaking (breakdancing) and graffiti writing. Nicknames were part of all four from the start. A DJ needed a name the crowd could chant, a graffiti writer signed a tag on walls and trains, and a breaker was known by a name on the dance floor. When rappers became the stars, the stage name came with them.

That is why so many rap names sound like titles. MC means master of ceremonies, the host who kept the party going, and prefixes like Grandmaster, King and Doc claim a rank. Later generations added their own patterns: Lil and Young became so common that whole waves of young artists used them, and many rappers took the spelling of their name into their own hands. A stage name also does something practical: it separates the person from the performer and keeps a little privacy.

Rap styles in the generator

Trap grew out of Southern rap, especially in Atlanta, in the 2000s, and is known for booming 808 drums and fast, rattling hi-hats. Drill is a darker, trap-influenced style that began in Chicago in the early 2010s and later grew big in London and New York, with sliding bass lines and a cold, heavy mood. Drill lyrics are often violent, so the drill style here keeps only the sound and the weather of it: concrete, frost, night shifts and streetlights. Old school looks back to the late 1970s and the 1980s, the years of turntables, boomboxes and breakdancing. Conscious rap is about ideas, society and history, and its names lean toward words like Griot, Proverb and Lexicon. Melodic rappers sing as much as they rap, and underground artists release music on their own, outside the big labels, often with stranger, more poetic names.

Rap names for a school project or talent show

Every word in this generator is clean, so the names are safe for a classroom rap, a school talent show, a music class assignment or a family party. The funny style is the easiest place to start for younger rappers: names like a snack, a chore or a household gadget get a laugh before the beat even drops. For a class project about hip hop, the old-school style and the prefix table above make a good starting point for talking about how rap names work.

Tips for choosing a rapper name

  • Make it easy to search. A name that is only a common word (Storm, Gold) is hard to find online. Add a prefix or a second word so fans can find you.
  • Make it easy to spell after hearing it once. A stage spelling is fine, but more than one unusual letter makes you hard to find.
  • Check the handles. Look for a matching username on the platforms you plan to use. Our Username Generator helps when your first choice is taken.
  • Keep it clean if you want to perform at school, on the radio or for family events. Every name here already is.
  • Think ten years ahead. Lil and Young are classics, but ask yourself whether you will still like the name when you are older.
  • Do not borrow a famous name. Using another artist’s name, or something very close to it, confuses listeners and can cause legal trouble. The generator skips names that belong to well-known artists, but there are thousands of rappers, so always search before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a rap name?
Start with something true, like your name, a nickname or your initials, then add a prefix such as Lil, Young, MC or Big, or an ending like the Great or on the Mic. Say it out loud the way a host would announce you, and search it before you use it.
What's my rap name?
Type your first name into the box and press Generate. The first result is worked out from the letters of your name, so the same name always gives the same rap name; the rest of the list gives you more ideas built on it.
Can it make a rap name from my initials or a letter?
Yes. Type initials like J.T. for names such as Lil J.T. or Jay Tee, or type one letter to get names that start with it or are built around it.
What does Lil mean in rap names?
Lil is short for little. It often marks a younger artist, the youngest member of a crew, or someone who looks up to an older rapper, and it is one of the most common prefixes in rap.
What does MC stand for?
MC stands for master of ceremonies. In hip hop it means the rapper, the person on the microphone who keeps the crowd moving, and it is often spelled emcee.
Does it make female rapper names?
Yes. Choose Female and most names use prefixes such as Queen, Lady, Miss, Princess or Empress, with more words like Velvet, Honey and Sapphire. It works with every style.
Can it make producer, DJ, group or mixtape names?
Yes. Use the Generate option to switch between rapper names, producer and DJ names, group and duo names, mixtape and playlist names, and rapper names for pets.
Are these names already taken by real rappers?
The names are original combinations, and the generator skips names that belong to well-known artists. There are thousands of rappers, though, so search a name on streaming services and social media before you use it.
Are the names clean enough for kids?
Yes. Every word was chosen by hand and kept family-friendly, including the drill and trap styles, so the names work for school projects and talent shows. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser.
