How to use the username generator

  1. Type your name or a word you like (optional). Up to two words work: a first and last name (Mia Jones), or a name and a hobby (Mia art). The generator builds usernames around them, including alliterating ones like MythicMia. Leave the box empty for completely new ideas.
  2. Pick a style. There are 12 of them: cool, cute, aesthetic, funny, gaming, dark and gothic, nature, sci-fi and space, fantasy, professional, made-up words, and random dictionary words.
  3. Choose your platform. Every result follows that app’s length limit and allowed characters, and the rule line under the options tells you what they are.
  4. Set the length (short 4–6 characters, medium 7–12, long 13 or more), the format (CamelCase, lowercase, under_score or dot.ted) and whether to add numbers.
  5. If you typed a word, choose where it goes: anywhere, at the start or at the end. Switch Make to Matching pairs for two usernames that belong together.
  6. Tap a username to copy it. It also drops into the username rule checker, which shows at a glance which of 11 platforms accept it. Tap ♥ to keep a shortlist, and press Generate for new ideas; nothing repeats during your visit.

The ideas come from 2,565 hand-picked words in 10 style banks, 54 prefixes such as its, lil and hello, 82 endings such as hq, draws and studio, and 65 matching pairs. The funny, nature and Random words styles also mix in everyday words from our English dictionary. Every combination is checked so that no rude word appears, even where two words meet. Everything runs in your browser: what you type is never sent anywhere.

Username formats: CamelCase, lowercase, underscores and dots

The same two words can look calm, bold or tidy depending on how they are joined. All four formats below come from the same idea, so you can compare them side by side:

FormatExampleGood for
CamelCaseOliveOrchidReadable at a glance; a capital starts each word. Good for gaming, YouTube and X.
lowercaseoliveorchidSoft and simple. Popular for aesthetic and cute accounts.
under_scoreolive_orchidKeeps the words apart where periods aren’t allowed.
dot.tedolive.orchidClean and modern. Works on Instagram, TikTok, Discord and in email addresses.

Many apps ignore capital letters when you sign up, so MossyFern and mossyfern count as the same username. Where an app keeps your capitals, they make a long username easier to read. Periods and underscores are not allowed everywhere: the generator swaps in a symbol the platform accepts, or joins the words without one.

Short usernames (4 to 6 letters)

Short usernames are the easiest to remember and type, and they leave room for a display name or a tag. They are also the hardest to get, because almost every real word of four letters was taken long ago. Set Length to Short and the generator pairs tiny words (icy + fox), adds a two-letter start like oh or yo, or invents a word. Add your name and long names shrink to an initial, as in jfox.

Unique usernames: made-up words

If every name you try is taken, a word that doesn’t exist yet is the way out. The Made-up words style builds pronounceable words from simple syllables, so they read easily and can be spelled after hearing them once. Each one is screened against a list of brand and character names and unkind sounds. A made-up word is also a good start for a brand or channel name, since it is yours from day one.

Username ideas with your name

Most people want their name in the username, so friends can find them. Type it in the box and the generator adds a matching word before or after it, a prefix like its or hey, or an ending like draws or vibes. These came from the name Mia:

  • captainmia
  • miachipmunk
  • lemonmia
  • chippermia
  • merrymia
  • maplemia
  • miapuppy
  • miabluebell
  • MiaOnyx
  • MiaWrites
  • MiaShade
  • MiaThunder
  • CycloneMia
  • OnyxMia
  • SummitMia
  • OhMia

Give two words and both are used. A name and a hobby (Mia art) makes usernames that say what your account is about:

  • mia.beats
  • captain.mia
  • poetic.mia
  • mia.art
  • art.codes
  • art.echo
  • art.star
  • art.mia
  • mia.orchard
  • amber.art
  • celestial.mia
  • misty.mia

Set Your word goes to At the start to keep your name first, which helps people who search for you by name. For privacy, use a first name or a nickname rather than your full name, and see the safety tips further down.

Professional usernames and business username ideas

For a work email, a portfolio, a business account or a professional profile, the Professional style keeps things simple: your name in clear forms (mia.jones, m.jones, jones.mia), your name plus what you do (miajones.design, hellomiajones), and no numbers unless you ask for them. Choose Email address as the platform to get addresses that follow email rules.

  • jones.mia
  • mia.jones
  • mia.jones.hq
  • hey.mia.jones
  • ask.mia.jones
  • m.jones.cooks
  • m.jones
  • mia.j
  • m.jones.draws
  • mia.jones.shop
  • m.jones.notes
  • m.jones.photo

Without a name, the same style makes calm, brandable names for a small business, a studio or a newsletter:

  • GlobalData
  • TheClearBeacon
  • LivelyLedger
  • StoneVenture
  • VividJournal
  • PurePeak
  • TheClearBridge
  • ShopWorks
  • SimplyThinker
  • GridStudio
  • ModernMap
  • TheGoodNotes

Matching usernames for couples and best friends

Matching usernames share a word or a theme, so anyone who sees one recognizes the other: sun and moon, salt and pepper, dawn and dusk. Switch Make to Matching pairs. Type two names (Mia Leo) and each person gets one half, or leave the box empty for pairs built on a shared word. Pairs work for couples, best friends, siblings, twins, or a main account and a second one.

  • peachypopcorn & peachymovie
  • bouncypug & bouncyalpaca
  • berrysnail & berryotter
  • pixelsquirrel & bytesquirrel
  • adorablevalentine & adorablecushion
  • peanutsnail & jellysnail

  • pastel.pancake & pastel.syrup
  • azure.leaf & azure.window
  • dusk.lock & dusk.key
  • delicate.yin & delicate.yang

Username rules by platform

Every app has its own rules for usernames, and the generator follows them when you pick a platform. Here is the quick reference for the length (in characters) and the symbols each one allows besides the letters A to Z and the numbers 0 to 9. Spaces, accented letters and emoji are not allowed in any of these usernames.

PlatformLengthSymbols allowedOther rules
Instagramup to 30periods, underscoresnone
TikTokup to 24periods, underscoresnone
YouTube handle3–30periods, underscores, hyphensnone
X (Twitter)up to 15underscoresnone
Snapchat3–15hyphens, underscores, periodsmust start with a letter; no symbol at the end
Reddit3–20underscores, hyphensnone
Twitch4–25underscoresnone
Discord2–32underscores, periodslowercase only; never two periods in a row
Roblox3–20underscoresone underscore at most; no underscore first or last
Minecraft (Java)3–16underscoresnone
Email address6–30periodslowercase only; no period first or last; never two periods in a row

Apps change their rules from time to time, so treat this as a guide and trust the sign-up screen if it says something different. The generator is stricter than any of them: it never puts a symbol at the start or end of a username or two symbols in a row, because those are often refused and easy to mistype. The email rules are the ones used by the largest free email service; other providers are similar.

Username ideas for Instagram, TikTok and other apps

Instagram username ideas

Periods and underscores both work on Instagram, so aesthetic dot.ted names fit well.

How to choose a good username

  • Say it out loud. If you have to spell it for a friend (“two L’s, then an underscore”), it is too complicated. Real words in a clear order are easier to share than clever spellings.
  • Keep it short. Under 15 characters works on almost every app, fits on a profile without being cut off, and is quicker to type in a search.
  • Make it fit what you post. An art account and a gaming channel need different names. A word about your topic (draws, bakes, plays) tells visitors what to expect.
  • Think about the future. A name tied to your age, your school year or this month’s trend can feel wrong in a few years. A word you will still like later is a better choice.
  • Use the same username everywhere. One name across all your accounts makes you easy to find and stops other people from using it in your place. Check it against every platform at once with the rule checker under the generator.
  • Go easy on numbers and underscores. One number or one separator is fine. A string like x_mia__2009_x looks like a leftover choice and is hard to remember.
  • Read it as one word. Joined words can make an accidental new word in the middle. The generator checks every seam for rude words, but give your own ideas a second look, or use CamelCase so the words stay clear.

How to check if a username is taken

This page can’t tell you whether a username is free: only each app knows who has which name, and we never send what you type anywhere. Checking is quick, though:

  1. Search for the name in the app, or open the profile address with the name at the end.
  2. Try it on the sign-up or change-username screen. Most apps say right away whether it is available, and many suggest close alternatives.
  3. Do this for every app where you want the name, ideally on the same day, before someone else takes it.

If your favorite is taken, small changes usually get you there:

TrickExample with sunnyotter
Add a small word in frontitssunnyotter, thesunnyotter, realsunnyotter
Add a separatorsunny.otter, sunny_otter
Swap the word orderottersunny
Change one word for a close cousinsunnybeaver, cozyotter
Add a short endingsunnyotterhq, sunnyotter.art
Add a number you like (not your birth year)sunnyotter7, sunnyotter22

Username safety tips for kids and teens

  • Don’t use your full name, birthday, age, school, street or city in a username.
  • Never make your username part of your password, and use a different password for each account.
  • Pick a name you would be happy for a teacher or a future employer to see.
  • A friendly or funny username gets a friendlier welcome than an aggressive one.

Every word bank in this generator was chosen by hand to be family-friendly, so the ideas are safe to use for a first account.

Username vs. display name

Most apps give you two names. The username (or handle) is unique: it appears after the @ and in your profile address, and it follows the rules in the table above. The display name is the bigger name on your profile. It doesn’t have to be unique, and on most apps it can include spaces and many symbols. That is the place for decorative letters from the Fancy Text Generator or a cute face from our kaomoji collection. Keep the username itself plain, so people can type it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I come up with a good username?
Start with something you like, such as your name, a hobby or an animal, and pair it with a word that fits your style. Keep it short, easy to say out loud and free of personal details like your birth year.
How do I make a username with my name?
Type your first name, or a first and last name, into the box and press Generate. The generator adds matching words, prefixes like its or hey, or endings like draws, and you can choose whether your name goes at the start or the end.
Can this tell me if a username is taken?
No. Only each app knows which names are in use, and this page never sends what you type anywhere. Search for the name in the app or try it on the sign-up screen; if it is taken, add a small word in front, a separator or a number.
How long can a username be?
It depends on the app: up to 30 characters on Instagram, 24 on TikTok, 15 on X and Snapchat, 20 on Reddit and Roblox, and 16 for Minecraft Java names. Pick a platform and every idea fits its limit.
What characters can I use in a username?
Letters and numbers work everywhere. Periods and underscores are allowed on Instagram and TikTok, X and Twitch allow only underscores, and Roblox allows a single underscore. Spaces, accented letters and emoji are not allowed in usernames.
What is a good short username?
Two tiny words (icyfox), a two-letter start plus a word (ohmoon), or a made-up word. Set Length to Short for ideas of 4 to 6 characters, and add a number if your favorite is taken.
How do I make matching usernames with a friend or partner?
Switch Make to Matching pairs. Type both names (Mia Leo) to get one half each, or leave the box empty for pairs that share a word, like calm.dawn and calm.dusk.
What is the difference between a username and a display name?
The username is unique, appears after the @ and must follow the app's rules. The display name is the larger name on your profile; it does not have to be unique and can usually include spaces and symbols.
Is the username generator safe for kids?
Yes. Every word list was chosen by hand to be family-friendly, and every combination is checked so that no rude word appears where two words meet. For privacy, avoid your full name, age, school or city in a username.
Is it free to use these usernames?
Yes. The generator is free with no sign-up, and you can use any idea for social media, games, email or a business. Everything runs in your browser.
